In 2012, we formed Mongabay.org, a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit.

These are some of Mongabay.org's initiatives for 2012-2013:

Education initiative >>

Expand kids.mongabay.com to include activities and lessons that meet state-specific standards, while improving the interactivity of the site. These will be developed by school teachers and curriculum experts. The new initiative will leverage the 150,000 people who already visit the kids section on a monthly basis.

Reporting in Spanish and Indonesian >>

Expand our overseas reporting in languages other than English. Mongabay-Indonesia launched in May 2012. We aim to launch a Spanish version based in Latin America in 2013.

I founded Mongabay in 1999 out of my passion for wildlife and rainforests. Originally a side project which consumed nights and weekends, I quit my day job to run mongabay full-time in 2004. I told my story in a TEDxYouth talk given in 2010.
